Knocked-Out Tooth: First Aid Steps to Save It

The Emergency First 30 Minutes That Save It When A Tooth Is Knocked Out

Maxillofacial Prosthodontist & Implantologist: Dr. Venkateswara Reddy

Within 30 to 60 minutes of a knocked out tooth, you have a fighting chance to save the tooth. The actions performed during that window are more significant than anything a dentist may do subsequent to the window. Take immediate action by calling our emergency number +91 91088 29069 and use the steps below.

1. Find the Tooth and Hold It Correctly

Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown. The white, visible crown is the part you are used to chewing, and NOT the root (the yellowish end inside the gum). It is important not to manipulate the root or damage the delicate fibres that allow re-implantation.

2. Rinse Carefully Without Scrubbing

Rinse with some care, without scrubbing. When dirty, rinse it off very quickly with clean running water, with the plant held by the crown. This only takes 10 seconds. Avoid scrubbing, soap or drying it with a cloth or tissue. Scrubbing removes any tissue required to reattach the tooth.

3. Try to Reinsert the Tooth

Make an effort to reinsert it into the hole. Gently insert the tooth back into its socket, in the right direction, and bite down lightly on a clean cloth to keep it in place, if possible, do NOT push the tooth back in if you are unable. The one thing far better than this is to have a tooth in its socket — even if it is only loosely. This is the best treatment you can do — a tooth in its socket, even whit F يبدأ (even loose), has a better survival rate.

4. Store the Tooth in Milk if Reinsertion Isn’t Possible

If it can’t be reinserted place it in milk, it’s important to keep it moist. Can’t reforget it back in, or is it a kid who may swallow it? Put the tooth in a little cup of cold milk. Water does a poor job of sustaining the productiveness of the root surface compared to milk. The person’s own saliva (into an old cup) or a saline solution will work in a pinch also, but not tap water which would harm the root cells.

5. Seek Dental Care Immediately

Seek a dentist’s care ASAP. Each minute away from the mouth or storage unit decreases the chances. This is not a “see how the day looks” injury, it’s a “drive straight there” situation.

6. Call Ahead Before You Arrive

Ring up in advance for our preparation. Ring us at +91 91088 29069 on your way. If I tell you that it is an avulsed tooth, you can have the room and materials prepped for you, sparing precious minutes.

What NOT to Do

Do not touch or clean the root area with scrubbing, antiseptic or toothpaste. Do not allow the tooth to dry out, no matter even for a few minutes – a dried out root cell is a dead cell and isn’t going to come back. Also, be sure not to rinse it with a full, strong stream of water from the tap or under running water for longer than needed because this is short sharp and no running.

Special Considerations for Children

Baby Teeth Are Different – Do Not Re-implant

If it’s a child’s baby tooth that’s come out, don’t try to put it back in. When the baby tooth is re-implanted it can harm the permanent tooth growing beneath it. Do not let the child panic, if you prefer you can save the tooth, then please call us (Please note: this is a child’s tooth and must be treated differently to an adult’s.)

What Happens at the Clinic?

What to Expect at the Clinic

However, we will clean the area and move the tooth back to the correct location if it is not in place, and splint the tooth to the neighbouring teeth, for the one to two weeks necessary for the area to heal, while it remains in place. The tooth’s nerve will be checked in the coming months because some avulsed teeth will require a root canal treatment even after successful re-implantation. We will take you through this option head on and not be stingy in the telling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a knocked out tooth salvageable if it is still in soil an hour after an accident?

After 60 minutes, the odds are severely reduced, but there’s no harm in trying…teeth have been saved after this time with varying storing methods. Please do not wait in case it’s too late, give a call and come in anyway.

In which liquid should the tooth be kept?

Cold milk is best. Alternate solution is good: saline solution or person’s own saliva. Do not use tap water as this is bad for the surface of the root.

Does it hurt when inserted back in?

Usually, there will be some mild discomfort for a very short time, it is certainly better than to have the tooth gone, and it is temporary. Most people do it themselves on the spot right at the time, particularly since they are aware that by doing so he will benefit accordingly.

Are knocked out teeth always salvable?

No, depending on impact,-speed of action and handling of the tooth. But the window for immediate action is within the first half hour, so you’ll have the best odds if you act quickly.
